AvenueB Creates a Path to Success for Biology Students

Program Builds on Positive Learnings from Engineering Avenue By Trevor Stewart

The Genentech Foundation has donated $2.5 million to the University of California, Davis, College of Biological Sciences — the college’s largest single gift ever — to fund a program that will help biology students transferring from community college. Called AvenueB, the program will provide financial support and preparatory programs for students going to four-year university.

UC Davis atmospheric scientist Da Yang named a 2019 Packard Fellow

Yang is among 22 early-career scientists and engineers nationwide to receive the prestigious award this year. Each will be awarded $875,000 over five years to pursue their research. He is the first recipient of the Packard Fellowship in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis.

UC Davis Chemist Marie Heffern Wins Hartwell Foundation Award

The Hartwell Foundation awarded Heffern, an assistant professor in the College of Letters and Science’s Department of Chemistry, a 2018 Individual Biomedical Research Award to study metal micronutrient status as a biomarker and treatment target for obesity and metabolic disease.

UC Davis Begins Construction on Advanced Greenhouses

In addition to the greenhouses CA&ES is constructing, Mars, Incorporated is building two greenhouses within the complex to house a large collection of cacao plants. Together with UC Davis faculty, plant breeders from Mars, Incorporated will work to improve and perfect the tropical trees, which are endangered by deforestation.
